Vegas, baby!

Vegas is the perfect weekend getaway. It just happened to be the weekend after my company’s layoffs, so it was great way to unwind after such a stressful week. It was only a three day trip (Sun-Mon), but we were able to cram in a lot of activities into that time! We were able to see Le Reve, our first Cirque du Soleil show, which was mind-blowing. (The stage was made out of water!) And best of all, our trip was a sweet, sweet deal – it came to $300 which included one Cirque show, round trip airfare (SFO to Vegas), and 2 nights at the Excalibur hotel. There is an upside to a recession.

Bad Movies, Great Popcorn

I received a party invitation from my friend Brian Haslanger, for Bad Movie night. What a great idea for a get-together! The invitation read:

Prepare yourselves for Bad Movie Night: Disaster Edition. We’ll hang out at my house, drink refreshing beverages, and watch two terrible films. The general plot for these movies: One scientist saw it coming and nobody listened. Now we are all doomed.

Our choices: (one line synposes written by Brian)

  • The Core: The core of the Earth stops spinning.
  • Daylight: Sylvester Stallone is a taxi driver/EMT stuck in a tunnel collapse.
  • The Day After Tomorrow: The next ice age happens overnight.
  • Poseidon: Cruise ship turns upside down.
  • Armageddon: Asteroid will smash into Earth unless Bruce Willis can dig a hole.
  • Volcano: Tommy Lee Jones is a geologist.
  • Twister: Bill Paxton chases tornados.
  • Firestorm: Howie Long (the football guy) is a firefighter. There is a prison break at some point.

Vietnamese Summer Rolls

One of my favorite things to do in the summer is make Vietnamese Summer Rolls. They’re refreshing, healthy, and have lots of flavor. And best of all – it requires very little cooking! The last thing I want to do on a hot day is turn on the stove. And if you don’t like shrimp, try sliced steak or shredded chicken.

I warn you though, these do need to be made fresh. The rice paper becomes hard after a few hours, and the vegetables lose their crunch. If you’re making this for a party, I suggest preparing the vegetables and sauce beforehand, and assembling them right before serving.

Greeks Know How To Party

My goal: to eat my way from one end of the Greek Festival to the other. I love Greek food. I love it so much, I put this festival on my calendar a year ago, and I’ve been anticipating the dolmas, gyros, and baklavas since then.

Maybe the ancient Greeks invented the Olympics to work off all that Baklava.

Greeks know how to party. I went to Greece some years ago, and I remember how happy and relaxed everyone was – eating late, chatting to neighbors, lounging by the ocean – and it was only Tuesday. Sigh – I could use that anyday now. I was hoping I could relive some of that experience by going to the festival. While there’s no stunning view of the Aegean Sea, the sound of Greek polka and the smell of lamb roasting brought me back.

Layoffs: How it feels on the other side

It was Monday morning, around 10am. I was listening to the Beatles on my headphones, and completely immersed in some Flash work – when I looked up and saw that the room was empty and my creative director urgently telling me there’s a company meeting in one of our other buildings. I thought, “That’s weird. Our staff meeting isn’t scheduled until Thursday, and we never have meetings in the other building.” Whatever. It was probably some project I just got put on, or an update on our insurance policy.

I was the first to arrive in the conference room, and waited for a few minutes for the others to file in. Not everyone arrived. The founder of the company came in, and he got right to the point. He gravely announced,

I’m afraid this isn’t a good meeting. The people you see in this room are the ones that will continue working here. Everyone else will be packing up their things and leaving in a few hours.

I looked frantically around the room, choking back tears. The more I thought about who wasn’t there, the lower my heart sank. And once I realized that almost no one from my design team was there, I almost couldn’t take it anymore.

There was a short session of questions that followed, and then a solemn walk back to the building I worked in. While I was in that awful meeting, there was an even worse meeting that went on at the same time, in my building. You can guess which one that is.

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I walked in. I saw my team members there, quietly packing up, some crying. Hugs, emails, and wishes were exchanged. It was incredibly difficult. And after a few hours, they were gone.

Safari Adventure

I went on a safari! Not in Africa…but right here in Northern California.
I was ecstatic when Mike surprised me with a trip to Safari West for my birthday. It’s a drive-through wildlife park – you sign up for a tour, and a guide takes you in an open-air Jeep ride through the entire property, stopping to talk about animals that are seen along the way.

It is MUCH better than a zoo. Seems to me that zoo animals are either sleeping most of the time, or look depressed. Here, the animals are on acres of open space, and are free to roam around with the other animals. It’s also nice to see animals not behind bars, and behaving as they normally would in the wild. There were a few times where we had to wait for animals to cross the road, or had to drive around looking for animals because the guide didn’t know where they wandered off to…I loved how the tour was unpredictable like that. It made it more of an “adventure”.

The space is owned by a couple, Peter and Nancy Lang, who actually live on the land – and not in a huge mansion either, just a modest little house tucked in the corner of the property. I would be so happy if there were that many animals in my backyard. MTV Cribs needs to come over and check it out.
