Customizing a Flip Camera

flip-camera-photo.jpgI designed this Flip camera for my company as a Christmas gift to our clients. It turned out great! This is my second time doing it, and it turned out much better than the first time. I took this photo with my iPhone (sorry it’s out of focus).

Here’s where you start creating one »

Some things to watch out for if you decide to design one
(that they don’t tell you on the website):
- The edges fade. Be cautious of this if the design is full bleed.
- The design will also get cropped more than you specify on the website - make sure your margins are wide enough.
- Solid colors print out best. Just be aware of this if you decide to use a photo as part of the design.
- They take two file types: PNG and JPG. Use PNG if you can - the image quality is better.

Tips:
- Designing on white is the best, because the actual camera is glossy white. When you submit your design, make sure the background is a transparent PNG - this will allow the glossy white paint to show through your design (printed matte with some texture). Here’s an example of a transparent PNG I submitted
- Do some actual scale printouts - the camera is smaller than you think!

Overall, I thought the printing quality was more on the poor side, but the fact that you can design your own camcorder is enough to make me want to do it myself. The photos below were screenshots taken from their website after I uploaded the design.
