SympathyTree was formed to provide people a virtual place to come and celebrate the lives of those they have recently lost and share their stories of love and loss, sadness and joy, and in the process, provide comfort to each other during a difficult time. (Source: SolutionSet Case Study)

I designed their logo with the goal of tying in a tree’s life with that of a loved one, in the most poetic, uplifting way possible. This goal alone led me to hundreds of questions, and inspired me to do an enormous amount of research on cultural symbolisms of the tree, as well as how various cultures respect the passing of friends and family.

It led me to ask question such as: Can life be symbolized through the fruit of the tree, the roots of the tree, or perhaps the rings in an old tree trunk? Would SympathyTree’s services best be shown by a tree providing shelter for someone, or be part of a path that leads to someone’s healing process? What existing cultural symbols of the tree are there to avoid, or bring back to view?

After several explorations, it came down to the simplest idea of all - a leaf gracefully falling, signifying the end of a life, yet the shadow of the heart as a symbol of the lasting impression of the impact of their love.
