Almost immediately after Mike bought the ’71 VW Bus (“Boris”), our good friends Yusuf and Ashley pounced at the idea of Boris being the getaway car. And of course, we were more than happy to be part of the wedding!
A few weeks before the wedding, the wheels were painted, the exterior touched up, and Boris was dressed up to the nines in bright purple flowers (how masculine). But we wanted to make the experience really fun for Yusuf and Ashley, so we also made sure we rolled up in ridiculous ’70s garb and obnoxiously loud disco music. While I was decked out in a psychedelic dress and big shades, Mike was sporting a fake hippie beard and actual homemade tie-dye he made the night before.
Yusuf and Ashley were the two getting married. They met in New York, and came out to California together, which is how I met them. Yusuf is originally from Sri Lanka, and Ashley from Kentucky. That may sound like an unlikely pair, but they couldn’t be more perfect for each other.
The ceremony took place at the stunningly beautiful Monterey coastline.
Boris the Getaway Car – I mean, The Party Bus
Boris is looking pretty shiny and “new”!
I bought the chunkiest strand of flowers to hide the damaged bumper.
Mike writing “Just Married” in white shoe polish. The other windows read “Honk! Honk!”
Guess who this is? It’s my hippy boyfriend!
“Congrats, dude. That was groovy.”
Yusuf loved the outfits and the bus!
So what we thought was going to be a romantic two person getaway ride turned out to be a party bus for the entire wedding party. It was incredibly illegal, and incredibly fun. Yusuf doesn’t mind riding with the girls at all…
Disco Time in the Party Bus
Reception at Memory Garden, Monterey
The reception took place under a grove of trees.

I’ve never had Sri Lankan food before, and I’m so glad I was able to try it at their wedding. It was so, so, so, soooo good. The specialty were “hoppers”, which are these thin, crepe-like bowls made by pouring thin batter into a hot, bowl-shaped pan. It’s served with egg and several other spicy side items. (read more about it here)
You’re probably thinking, how does one pan feed an entire wedding party?
Well, there was a whole row of them, manned by hopper-making extraordinaires.
Here’s how a finished hopper looks like.
Late night at the hotel bar
The night ended with drinks at the hotel bar, where everyone was able to unwind after a long day.

Thank you guys – you are both awesome and we love you too!
So much fun…They should get married twice a year.
party buses are the coolest vechicles on town, riding them is so much fun ~
